Myofascial Pain Syndrome or Muscle Pain
If you have muscle pain brought on by touching or applying pressure to a certain spot, it could be myofascial pain syndrome (MPS). Of course, it could be quite a few other ailments too.
Basically, MPS is a condition marked by the presence of muscle pain and inflammation in soft tissue. People with this condition are sometimes depressed and may have insomnia. The name is derived from the connective tissue (the fascia) that covers the muscles. It is in this tissue that the swelling and tenderness reside.
MPS can be caused by an injury to a muscle or by a strain to a muscle, ligament, tendon or muscle group. The condition is reoccurring and can remain for extended periods. The pain that stems from this ailment can be mysterious, difficult to pinpoint. It may originate from one muscle or a group of muscles. What is mysterious is that a person may experience the discomfort in areas other than where the strain or injury exists. This is called referred pain. There are other possible causes of the syndrome: fatigue, inactivity and medical ailments.
Attempting to self-diagnose this condition is challenging to say the least. As stated earlier, muscle pain can be associated with many problems and this is the primary symptom of myofascial. If the hurting is accompanied by fatigue and depression that may be of some help, but still this is not enough to come to a decisive conclusion.
To alleviate or confirm concerns in this area, a medical diagnosis may be required. Medical exams can indicate whether or not you are suffering with MPS. If you are then get prepared for physical therapy. That is the primary treatment.
Other treatment includes trigger point (origin of pain or injury) injections, massages and spraying the trigger point with a coolant then stretching the muscle(s).
